Karen Durán-Cantor, a 16-year old Colombian girl, died on May 22/2015 after complications related to a new onset autoimmune disease triggered by 2 shots of Gardasil, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine currently given indiscriminately to all school age girls through massive immunization campaigns across the country. This program, initiated by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and under direct supervision of Engineer Alejandro Gaviria, his Health Minister, has claimed hundreds of victims in Colombia. It has not yet prevented a single case of uterine cancer, although it might do so in 10-30 years according to the best estimates. Typically, population-wide immunization campaigns target 9-year old girls and are considered mandatory, but are carried out without educating parents or children alike, without requesting their informed consent, and without taking into account their unique health susceptibilities, underlying disease or family physician’s advice. This is a program sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization under the Decade of Vaccines (2011-2020) goal to achieve the Millennium Development Goalsin compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda 21. Thousands of girls and women have got sick across the world and a few of them have died due to similar programs in many other countries. Please watch the documentary “The Vaccinated Girls – Sick and Betrayed” about HPV vaccine associated adverse events in Denmark (link below).

Karen, who enjoyed excellent health except having her appendix surgically removed, received the first Gardasil shot in her school “Carlos Lozano y Lozano” soon after her 15th birthday near the end of 2013. She received the second shot in February 2014. Soon after and according to her mother Beatriz, Karen became sleepy, suffered from lightheadedness, nausea and vomiting, lost weight and her hands became swollen. She had joint and finger pain and was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Despite receiving medical therapy, her disease progressed and she soon had to stop attending school due to constant severe pain. She was finishing her high school year and was not able to graduate in an educational institution in Fusagasugá, her hometown.

Karen and her family sought a second opinion from the Clínica Colsubsidio in Bogotá, where she stayed for one month until August 01/2014 and where she was diagnosed with lupus, scleroderma and had a pleural effusion that required drainage to help her breathe. She complained of shortness of breath and breathing difficulty due to accumulation of fluid between her lungs and chest wall. At the time, Karen had lost the ability to walk, and could not go to the bathroom nor take a shower by herself. She complained of right-sided pain, the same side where she got the Gardasil shots. She had a relapse in 2015 and was admitted again to the Pediatric Clinica Colsubsidio.

On May 21, Karen had difficulty breathing while at her home in a Fusagasugá, Cundinamarca where she lived and received oxygen in a local institution. She was referred to La Samaritana Hospital in the capitol city in Bogotá, a higher complexity hospital located 100 miles away. She was admitted immediately into the Intensive Care Unit where she developed fatal respiratory failure and was subsequently pronounced dead.

This is the first documented death of a Colombian girl after developing an autoimmune disease triggered by mandatory HPV vaccination. In the Caribbean town of Carmen de Bolivar, at least 517 girls have developed adverse events according to a recent study carried out by the Colombian National Institute of Health. The lead investigator was Dr. Fernando De La Hoz, a prominent epidemiologist, who resigned after concluding that adverse events developed by the girls were due to a massive psychogenic disease. Dr. De La Hoz got his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine where he defended his thesis on the Hepatitis B vaccination program applied in the Colombian Amazon. During his Ph.D. candidacy, none of the vaccinated people in the Amazon developed a massive psychogenic disorder.

Although the fluid that smothered Karen by accumulating between her lungs and chest wall was massive in amount; there was nothing ‘psychogenic’ about it. It was due to uncontrolled inflammation triggered by vaccine components either contaminants or in association with the alum-based adjuvant. This disorder is called ASIA, an acronym to mean Autoimmune/Inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants as originally described by Dr. Yehuda Shoenfeld to encompass a wide range of disorders characterized by chronic stimulation of the immune system as occurs in siliconosis due to breast implants, neuropathy syndromes due to adjuvanted vaccines, macrophage myofascitis at the muscle site of injection, Gulf War Syndrome and sick building syndrome. Just on May/2015, a Colombian colleague of Dr. Shoenfeld, Doctor Juan Manuel Anaya, recently reported the clinical and genotypic features of 3 Colombian girls who developed inflammatory disorders of the skeleton in association with having received the quadrivalent Human Papilloma Virus vaccine Gardasil. This blog had made the diagnosis of ASIA syndrome for the cohort of girls in Carmen de Bolivar before Dr. Anaya’s study came to light in various lectures and symposia in 2014 based on testimonies and journalistic tally of symptoms. I’m glad Dr. Anaya has seen all patients that I have referred to him.

To further prove the lack of association with a psychosomatic cause to explain Karen’s disease, we have to see a video that she recorded at home prior to the International Women’s Day observed on March 8, 2015. In it, we see Karen fully in her senses despite the aggressive disease that took her life. She calmly states “We have to be aware it was the human papilloma shot”. At the end of video she once again warns:  “Daddies, mommies, it’s the shot, and I, as a woman, say ‘NO’ to the human papilloma vaccine this March 08th, we’re going to fight for life, let’s say ‘YES’ to life, and ‘NO’ to the human papilloma vaccine. Why? Because women are sacred and blessed, I love you so much”.
